First prototype of multi-user systems successfully integrated with the open-source networking framework Ubiq.

Developers at Albstadt-Sigmaringen University are currently working on further developing the university’s own learning platform. The focus is on integrating multi-user XR components that will enable collaborative work, learning, and training in virtual spaces.

The goal is to enhance the learning platform so that trainees can intuitively navigate, communicate, and interact in an immersive 3D environment. The focus lies on the following features:

  • Multi-user capability: fully interactive virtual rooms for up to 20 people.
  • Role and rights management: flexible rights management for different user groups (e.g., teachers and trainees).
  • Cross-platform use: access via Meta Quest 3 (Meta Horizon OS, based on Android), iOS, Windows Desktop, or directly in the browser.
  • Real-time communication: integrated voice and text chat for collaborative interaction.
  • Flexible hosting: locally on your own PC/laptop, on a dedicated server, or externally via a cloud provider — with a focus on a transparent and cost-efficient solution.

Selection of Technology

Several multiuser frameworks were put to the test to determine the technological basis for the project, including Photon (Fusion2), Netcode for GameObjects, FishNet, Meta Building Blocks, and Ubiq. Following initial trials, Ubiq was selected for further development, based on positive results in terms of functionality, technical implementation, and extensive application possibilities.

Ubiq is an open multi-user framework for virtual reality and mixed reality that is continuously developed by University College London (UCL). It has already been used to create a successful prototype: multiple users can meet in a virtual space, interact with different objects, and chat in real time using the built-in voice chat. The system can be accessed either via desktop PC or Meta Quest 3 VR goggles.

It is worth noting that Ubiq is an open-source project available free of charge, ensuring that the solution remains user-friendly and flexible in the long term.

Outlook for Upcoming Developments

The team is currently looking into how to set up a lobby with multiple virtual rooms that trainees can switch between. At the same time, they are testing how to make the learning platform accessible to a broader audience with less technical experience, checking which hosting models work best for different settings, from classrooms to companies to workshops.

As part of this project, Albstadt-Sigmaringen University is continuously refining its learning platform and integrating modern XR technologies to open up a wide range of learning opportunities for trainees, which will both boost motivation and promote effective learning.
