Development Report 01: Learning Environment

The XR2ACH team at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences has developed a prototype learning environment — a virtual workshop with industry-relevant 3D models and a complete digital replica of an ÜLU refrigeration system.

After the initial phase of partner discussions, requirements gathering, and iterative conceptual work, the XR2ACH team at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences has developed a prototype learning environment: a virtual workshop (garage) with numerous 3D models that can be used for a variety of learning scenarios. The learning environment already features a bilingual, customizable user interface (German/English), controller and hand interactions, and an initial prototype of an audio assistant that provides contextual support.

Industry-Relevant 3D Models

Models provided by Bitzer include a compact hermetic screw compressor, semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors with external or integrated motors, and an air-cooled compact condensing unit that combines compressors, condensers, fans, and piping. These digital models can be viewed and examined individually or together, giving learners the opportunity to compare different compressor types for refrigeration and air conditioning technology.

Complete Replica of the Inter-Company Apprentice Training (ÜLU) Refrigeration System

The virtual garage also includes a complete digital replica of the standardized ÜLU (inter-company apprentice training) refrigeration system. This includes the compressor, condenser, expansion unit, and evaporator; oil separator, filter dryer, valves, and measuring devices; and an electrical control unit — providing a realistic replica of the equipment used in the training workshops.

Tools for a Practical Learning Environment

The garage is also equipped with a variety of virtual tools modeled on common, practical products, including brazing tools with different nozzles, cylinder pressure regulators and pressure gauges, wearable safety goggles and protective equipment, digital manifolds (Testo), extraction units (Promax, Value), leak detectors (INFICON), refrigerant scales (Mastercool, Refco), filter systems (TEKA), vacuum pumps (Refco), and various pipe cutters (Rothenberger). The different versions of the same tool types help prepare learners for the variety of real-life work situations.

Next Steps & Outlook

The team is currently working on the first interactive training units that digitally replicate existing ÜLU exercises. These include leak detection, refrigerant filling in refrigeration systems, and connection techniques such as soldering, flanging, bending, and crimping.

The individual exercise-relevant interactions are being tested and developed together into practical modules. The aim is to develop the learning platform step by step and make the application systematically usable for different training scenarios.
