Seven apprentices at the Bundesfachschule Kälte-Klima-Technik Leonberg tested the multiplayer features of the XR2ACH learning environment — collaborative CAD visualization and leak detection, a local server, the login system and early learning analytics features.

On 9 September 2026, the team of the InnoVET PLUS project XR2ACH returned to the Bundesfachschule Kälte-Klima-Technik (BFS) in Leonberg. After the large-group tests in spring, this visit focused on working together in virtual space: seven second-year apprentices — all of whom had already completed the block courses G-KK-1 to KK-3 — tested the multiplayer features of the learning environment, the new login system and early learning analytics features. On site were Albstadt-Sigmaringen University (HAS), which develops the multiplayer environment, and the Virtual Dimension Center (VDC), which is responsible for learning analytics and evaluation.

Learning together: CAD visualization and leak detection as a team

In groups of two to three, the apprentices explored the CAD visualization of the refrigeration system — with exploded view, section view, transparency and individual parts — and then worked together on the leak detection scenario. What was new is that the scenario was no longer run alone but in a shared room: one person carries out the inspection while the others follow every step and can discuss it directly.

To finish, all participants joined the same room at once to test text chat and the network under full load. HAS also tested operation via a local server on site — an important option for schools whose network does not allow a stable connection to the outside.

Log in, learn, evaluate

For the first time, the login system was used with a whole class: the apprentices signed in with a code via the headset’s browser and were taken straight back into the application. What is new: the app never asks for a password but simply shows a short code, so there is no tedious typing on a virtual keyboard and no shared group accounts. Because the process builds on open standards (OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect), every learning activity can be attributed to the right person without a secret key having to be stored in the app. In the background, logins, completed quizzes and learning progress were stored in a Learning Record Store based on the xAPI standard — the foundation for making learning progress traceable in future and, where needed, transferring it to systems such as Moodle or ILIAS.

What the apprentices say

Afterwards, participants completed a structured VDC questionnaire that, for the first time, also records how they feel before putting on the headset. Voice chat received the best ratings: in the view of all respondents, communication in the virtual room worked smoothly. The apprentices see the most room for improvement in text input in VR.

Exchange with the Bundesfachschule: next steps

Alongside the tests, there was time for an in-depth exchange with the BFS about further cooperation. The focus was on the upcoming learning scenarios for service and commissioning, a strategy for scaling the learning environment beyond individual classes, and workshops for trainers who will use the application in their own teaching. We also coordinated the demonstrations at Chillventa 2026, where XR2ACH can be experienced live as part of the Bundesfachschule Kälte-Klima-Technik exhibition stand.

What comes next

The technical measurements from the day set clear tasks for the next development stage — in particular graphics performance over longer sessions, the evaluation of quiz results and an even smoother login process. We also learned for on-site preparation: Wi-Fi credentials can in future be distributed centrally to all headsets in advance.

A warm thank-you to the apprentices and the team at the Bundesfachschule Kälte-Klima-Technik Leonberg for their hospitality and committed participation!
