At the INSIDE-CoVE multiplier event at the David-Roentgen-Schule Neuwied, the InnoVET PLUS project XR2ACH ran one of six hands-on workshops — collaborative leak detection in VR — and discussed Moodle, scaling and the use of XR at vocational schools.

On 17 September 2026, the David-Roentgen-Schule (DRS) in Neuwied hosted the INSIDE-CoVE Curriculum Lab — a multiplier event of the European Erasmus+ project INSIDE-CoVE (International Network for Sustainable and Innovative Digital Excellence in Construction Vocational Education). Under the motto “Experience Learning Labs – Develop Skills – Shape the Future”, participants chose freely in four rounds between six parallel hands-on workshops — from subject-specific AI and digital fault diagnosis on an exam control cabinet to compressor technology, digital surveying and thermal imaging.

The InnoVET PLUS project XR2ACH took part with the workshop “Leak Detection with VR”. On site were the Virtual Dimension Center (VDC) and Albstadt-Sigmaringen University (HAS).

Leak detection as a team, round by round

In every workshop round, apprentices tried out the leak detection scenario of the XR2ACH learning environment — not alone, but collaboratively in groups of two to three, working one after the other on the system in a shared virtual room. Interest was high: many apprentices signed up to take part, and the workshop was well attended throughout the day.

Exchange with the school: from Moodle to roll-out

Just as valuable were the conversations with the DRS teachers. Topics included:

  • Moodle in everyday teaching — how the school uses the platform today and where cooperation with XR2ACH can start,
  • cooperation at a larger scale next year,
  • ways to reach other stakeholders in refrigeration and air-conditioning training across Germany,
  • the European perspective that INSIDE-CoVE opens up,
  • and the organisational and technical requirements for introducing XR into the regular operation of a vocational school.

Inspiration from the industry

The day also offered insights into other exciting projects in refrigeration and air-conditioning technology — such as the AI application from Melzer Kälte Klima Lüftung GmbH, which showed in the workshop “Practical AI Support – Subject-Specific AI” how a subject-specific AI can support apprentices and teachers in their daily work.

Many thanks to the David-Roentgen-Schule Neuwied and the INSIDE-CoVE consortium for the invitation and the excellent organisation!
